"Germany, due to its central location on the European continent, was well-placed to be influence by the latest French and Italian music developments during the Baroque period (c.1600 to 1750). Political leaders, whether monarchs or city authorities, often brought in foreign musicians and sent their own talent abroad in order to keep abreast of the latest styles. The resulting influx of ideas, coupled with the German preference for counterpoint (the art of combining melodies), gave the imported idioms a distinct German identity."
Represented on this CD are some of the most important composers of the Northern German tradition in the 17th Century. They were employed in large churches in northern Germany - principally in and around Hamburg and Lübeck. Many of the organ recordings in this set are preceded by vocal renditions of the liturgical music upon which the organ repertoire is based.
